Diversity Week
During Diversity Week, each class focused on a different inspiring person and learned about their life and achievements. Examples included Katherine Johnson, Mae Jemison, Kevin Sinfield, Leonardo da Vinci, Muhammad Ali, Cathy Freeman and William Wilberforce. The children explored how these individuals showed courage, determination and kindness, and discussed why they are inspiring role models. As part of our spirituality focus, we reflected through “windows, mirrors and doors” — looking out to learn about others, looking inward to reflect on ourselves, and considering how we can make a difference in the world around us. Throughout the week, the pupils enjoyed sharing their ideas and learning from one another. At the end of the week, the children proudly shared what they had learned during a special assembly.
It was a pleasure to join the school assembly on diversity this morning to hear about the work the children have been doing to better understand diversity and why it’s so important. I heard presentations from the children about celebrating differences and where people come from, working hard and never giving up, working together and giving people a helping hand, the importance of being able to be your true self and helping create a better world for everyone. I also heard the children talking about the fact that sometimes it can be hard to do the right thing but that staying true to your values is important and over time can make a real difference. I was so impressed by the fantastic messages the children have been unpicking and grateful that our children attend a school where diversity is valued and celebrated in this way. A huge thank you to Miss Davidson for organising this topic work and inviting me along. I will be having a think this afternoon about what I would do to improve the world if I had a magic pencil!
