Our early morning start saw us catch the train from York Station at about 8am. We played lots of games, chatted to our friends and enjoyed the ride. Once we arrived at King’s Cross, we jumped on a Tube to Westminster – it was a really good experience but pretty busy so we had to make sure that we all got off at the right stop – one of the groups nearly stayed on a bit longer than they should have done! Mr Reeve took us on a walk down by the River Thames, where we saw the boats, the London Eye, some people taking wedding photos on a bridge and Big Ben. We went on a tour around the Houses of Parliament to see where the government make their decisions about how the country is run and went to the House of Lords, where we weren’t allowed to sit down on the seats! After our workshop here, we got back on the Tube to Leicester Square, where we had lunch at Pizza Hut. There was so much to eat and drink and the best bit was definitely the buffet because it was all delicious and there was so much choice. “The pizza was outstanding – it was so cheesy!” (Harmony).
After lunch, we went into the Lego shop, which had loads of incredible creations like a car you could sit in, a flying dragon and a model of Big Ben. We also had the chance to play table football and win a trophy, see Darth Vader do 6,7 and create our own Lego football characters. We spent quite a lot of time playing, building, creating and exploring before heading off on a tour around London, stopping off at lots of different landmarks: Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, China Town, Mayfair and lots more. “The best bit was when we all started waving at the security guards in the posh shops and cheering when they waved back” (Amy). We had a bit of time to relax in the park near Buckingham Palace before tackling the Tube in rush hour – it was SO busy but we managed to squeeze on and make it back to King’s Cross to get our train to York.
Thank you to all of the staff and governors who helped to organise and run this trip; it was definitely a day to remember!
