Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month

Every June since 2008, people from across the UK have celebrated Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month. The theme for this year was ‘Onwards With Hope’ and focussed on exploring how transformative hope can be and how people from the traveller community can work together to build a brighter future.

Three of our pupils helped to present an assembly, which looked at some of their traditions and cultures as well as what it’s like to be a traveller in 2026. It was fantastic to see how proud all of the boys were about their heritage and how positively they spoke about being part of their community. John Joe said he enjoys playing massive games of hide and seek with his friends who live on site.

Gary told us that it was ‘loads of fun’ being a traveller and Luke made us all feel hungry when he talked about stove tatie, which is a dish made from sausages, beef and potatoes. Perhaps the best thing that came from talking to the boys was that they enjoyed and valued living near to their friends and family because they were all so close to one another and could support each other. It was interesting for everyone to find out a bit more about the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community, learning about their similarities to non-travellers and celebrating their differences. A huge thank you to Gary, John Joe and Luke for contributing to and delivering the assembly to mark this month.
