Year 6 – Tockwith Church of England Primary Academy

Y6 Trip to London

Our early morning start saw us catch the train from York Station at about 8am. We played lots of games, chatted to our friends and enjoyed the ride. Once we arrived at King’s Cross, we jumped on a Tube to Westminster – it was a really good experience but pretty busy so we had to make sure that we all got off at the right stop – one of the groups nearly stayed on a bit longer than they should have done! Mr Reeve took us on a walk down by the River Thames, where we saw the boats, the London Eye, some people taking wedding photos on a bridge and Big Ben. We went on a tour around the Houses of Parliament to see where the government make their decisions about how the country is run and went to the House of Lords, where we weren’t allowed to sit down on the seats! After our workshop here, we got back on the Tube to Leicester Square, where we had lunch at Pizza Hut. There was so much to eat and drink and the best bit was definitely the buffet because it was all delicious and there was so much choice. “The pizza was outstanding – it was so cheesy!” (Harmony).

After lunch, we went into the Lego shop, which had loads of incredible creations like a car you could sit in, a flying dragon and a model of Big Ben. We also had the chance to play table football and win a trophy, see Darth Vader do 6,7 and create our own Lego football characters. We spent quite a lot of time playing, building, creating and exploring before heading off on a tour around London, stopping off at lots of different landmarks: Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, China Town, Mayfair and lots more. “The best bit was when we all started waving at the security guards in the posh shops and cheering when they waved back” (Amy). We had a bit of time to relax in the park near Buckingham Palace before tackling the Tube in rush hour – it was SO busy but we managed to squeeze on and make it back to King’s Cross to get our train to York.

Thank you to all of the staff and governors who helped to organise and run this trip; it was definitely a day to remember!

Martial Arts for Y6!

This morning we were visited by Chris from the Knaresborough Martial Arts & Leadership Academy. Chris spent time with our Y6 children showing them some moves and stretches and getting them to practice some controlled punches and kicks. You can see from the photographs that the children really enjoyed it and had fun with the padding and different combinations of strikes.

Y5/6 Visit Leeds Grand Mosque

Year 5 and 6 had a fascinating morning visiting Leeds Grand Mosque at the start of this term. They learned about Islam, including the Five Daily Prayers, the core beliefs of the faith, and how Muslims practise their religion in their everyday lives. The children asked thoughtful and respectful questions throughout the visit and were interested to discover many similarities between Islam, Christianity and Judaism. It was a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of different faiths and learn more about the beliefs and traditions of others. A big thank you to everyone at Leeds Grand Mosque for making us feel so welcome and sharing their knowledge with us.

KS2 Fencing

We were lucky enough to have Simon Trevithick join us from the Harrogate Fencing Club to teach the children in KS2 the basics of fencing. Fencing promotes individual initiative and discipline as well as respect, sportsmanship and a well-rounded form of mental and physical exercise. The children have had a great time learning the terms and moves unique to fencing. If you would like to join a fencing club, the Harrogate club is open to both adults and children. Y5/6 trip to Flamingo Land

Children in Y5 and 6 had a fantastic day at Flamingo Land Zoo. They took part in a rainforest workshop which built on the learning they had done in class. The children held giant cockroaches, stroked the tenrec hedgehog and learnt lots of fascinating facts. They then toured the zoo looking at both rainforest and other animals. What a great time they all had!

KS2 Tockwith Variety Performance

This week we held our KS2 Tockwith Variety Performance, and what a performance was! From Y5’s ’12 Days of Tockwith’ to poetry and dance, it was an amazing Christmas concert. The children put on an incredible performance and the parents even joined in too! It was typical Tockwith—children shone, teachers showed their creativity and the community of Tockwith joined in a gold old sing song at the end!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the staff and children for such an amazing Christmas performance this week. To organise that number of children so seamlessly and efficiently is incredibly impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful range of performances — from The Twelve Days of Christmas and Neville having a wee! to the beautiful poetry from Year 6, as well as the fantastic dancing and choreography throughout.

It was truly lovely to see all the children’s smiling faces, and they were certainly living life in all its fullness during the performances. All the hard work that goes into producing events like this is very much appreciated. Mrs Stubbs, School Governor.

Rugby Event at

Some of our children in Y6 travelled to York Rugby Union Football Club at the end of November to take part in a Rugby festival! The children travelled in the Ebor minibus to York RUFC after school and took part in some fun, inclusive games and had a ‘give it a go’ training session. Much fun was had by all of the children involved ! Thanks to Mr Reeve for driving the mini bus and Miss Stanton for organising the event.

Y6 at Humphrey Head!

Our Y6 children had an incredible start to the year with their residential at the end of September. On arrival the children explored the area, had their packed lunch and then found their dorm and made their beds. After that it was more exploring via a walk around the local area and team games – much entertainment! The first delicious tea of pasta bolognaise was then enjoyed by all before a night walk. Day two saw the children making their own packed lunch and then one group taking part in bushcraft activities and sea cliff traversing whilst the other went climbing and walking to Gummer’s How – wow! Day three, the groups swapped over and enoyed the opposite activities. The fourth day saw canoeing and raft building for the children, how incredible! The final day started with a full english breakfast and ended with a walk up to the old castle and then back on the bus to return to school. What a week!!

Y5/6 Visit Eden Camp

Years 5 and 6 had an eye-opening day learning lots about life during WW2. The staff were especially proud of how thoughtful and respectful the children were as they discussed life on the Home Front, rationing and the role of women during the war. The rain certainly didn’t dampen their enthusiasm – pupils came away buzzing with new knowledge and experiences.

Y6 Leavers!

Children in year 6 have had a leavers assembly at Tockwith Church, an assembly in school as well as a leavers party! How amazing. It was lovely to see so many parents and carers attend the leavers assemblies and services – thank you for supporting your children throughout their primary school journey!

The children had a great time at their leavers party – lots of pizza, ice creams and then a massive water fight!

Year 6 have been an absolute pleasure to teach, right from when they started in Reception! They’re such an amazing group of children who I know will do incredible throughout secondary school and beyond. I hope you all have a lovely summer break & hopefully I’ll still see some of you around. Mrs Jenkins
