Y5/6 Visit Leeds Grand Mosque

Year 5 and 6 had a fascinating morning visiting Leeds Grand Mosque at the start of this term. They learned about Islam, including the Five Daily Prayers, the core beliefs of the faith, and how Muslims practise their religion in their everyday lives. The children asked thoughtful and respectful questions throughout the visit and were interested to discover many similarities between Islam, Christianity and Judaism. It was a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of different faiths and learn more about the beliefs and traditions of others. A big thank you to everyone at Leeds Grand Mosque for making us feel so welcome and sharing their knowledge with us.

A Day in a Life at Wetherby High

Our children in year 5 travelled to Wetherby High School to take part in ‘A Day in the Life of Secondary School pupil’. The children took part in 5 different lessons and enjoyed a snack and lunch free of charge! The children were very well behaved and had a great day out!

KS2 Fencing

We were lucky enough to have Simon Trevithick join us from the Harrogate Fencing Club to teach the children in KS2 the basics of fencing. Fencing promotes individual initiative and discipline as well as respect, sportsmanship and a well-rounded form of mental and physical exercise. The children have had a great time learning the terms and moves unique to fencing. If you would like to join a fencing club, the Harrogate club is open to both adults and children. Y5 Bikeability

Bikeability is the government’s national cycle training programme. This training equips children with vital life skills. Pupils not only learn to cycle, they gain independence, social skills and a sense of wellbeing. After Bikeability, children are better at responding to risk and report increased confidence. As a result, more children cycle to school which in turn improves mental health and wellbeing. This allows children to get more out of the classroom, improving their attention span and engagement. Healthier habits lead to increased attendance and improved academic results.

The children spent a morning in the school playground and then ventured out onto the roads of Tockwith! The children were extremely well behaved and had a great time learning and improving their cycling skills!

Maths Day at York St John

Our Year 5 pupils swapped their classrooms for the campus as they headed to York St John University for an action-packed Maths Day! Working alongside talented trainee teachers, our students dove headfirst into a series of rigorous mathematical challenges designed to stretch their logic and problem-solving skills. Between the “brain-gym” sessions, the children enjoyed a grand tour of the university grounds, where they explored the vast library, the quiet reflection of the chaplaincy, and the buzzing student hub. A highlight for many was sitting in a real lecture theatre, giving them a true taste of life in higher education! A fantastic day was had by all, and we are incredibly proud of our ongoing relationship with the university, which continues to provide such inspiring opportunities for our young learners.

Y5/6 trip to Flamingo Land

Children in Y5 and 6 had a fantastic day at Flamingo Land Zoo. They took part in a rainforest workshop which built on the learning they had done in class. The children held giant cockroaches, stroked the tenrec hedgehog and learnt lots of fascinating facts. They then toured the zoo looking at both rainforest and other animals. What a great time they all had!

KS2 Tockwith Variety Performance

This week we held our KS2 Tockwith Variety Performance, and what a performance was! From Y5’s ’12 Days of Tockwith’ to poetry and dance, it was an amazing Christmas concert. The children put on an incredible performance and the parents even joined in too! It was typical Tockwith—children shone, teachers showed their creativity and the community of Tockwith joined in a gold old sing song at the end!

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the staff and children for such an amazing Christmas performance this week. To organise that number of children so seamlessly and efficiently is incredibly impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful range of performances — from The Twelve Days of Christmas and Neville having a wee! to the beautiful poetry from Year 6, as well as the fantastic dancing and choreography throughout.

It was truly lovely to see all the children’s smiling faces, and they were certainly living life in all its fullness during the performances. All the hard work that goes into producing events like this is very much appreciated. Mrs Stubbs, School Governor.

Y5 Hockey

Children in year 5 were invited to Wetherby High School to take part in a hockey event. The children travelled across to Wetherby by coach and when they got there were able to try various hockey related activities – shooting, dribbling and stopping the (tennis) ball! A great time was had by all and many thanks to Wetherby High for inviting us!

Y5/6 Visit Eden Camp

Years 5 and 6 had an eye-opening day learning lots about life during WW2. The staff were especially proud of how thoughtful and respectful the children were as they discussed life on the Home Front, rationing and the role of women during the war. The rain certainly didn’t dampen their enthusiasm – pupils came away buzzing with new knowledge and experiences.

Y5/6 Production ‘Star Worts – The Umpire Strikes Back!’

This year we were treated to an amazing performance of The Umpire Strikes Back. The children entertained us all the way through the hour and 20 minute performance. Their comic timing was impeccable and their acting was on point. It is lovely to hear every line that is said during these performances and to see all the children involved is fantastic. The children also sang beautifully and the soloists were inspirational.

Thank you so much to Mrs Perry, Mr Goodacre and all other support staff who gave the children this opportunity to reach their individual potential. Wow!
