A Miracle in Town

Christmas has officially started when school starts planning and rehearsing for the nativity. This year our wonderful Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children entertained their families and school with ‘A Miracle in Town’, and what an amazing performance it was. Reception and Year 1 dressed up as kings, shepherds, angels, stars, donkeys, camels and sheep, townsfolk, innkeepers and not forgetting Mary and Joseph to tell the story, with Year 2 taking on the role of narrators. Year 1 recited a poem, where even Neville featured and Year 2 sang a song, with a small group taking on the first verse before all joined in.

The hard work paid off and the children did a sterling job entertaining everyone and helping to spread the festive cheer- special lifelong memories! Well done children!

All year groups have settled into school routine really well, including our super star Reception class, who have been learning about Life in Space, spending time at Forest School, getting involved in The Nativity and much more. Mrs Grainger and the team could not be prouder of the progress they have made!

Reception Trip to Eureka

As part of our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) week, children in Reception visited Eureka, the National Children’s Museum in Halifax. What an incredible day they all had! The children investigated lots of differnet areas, from bus driving to dentistry to engineering followed by a little play in the outside playground! Thanks to Mrs Grainger for organising the event

Cricket!

Last week children in Reception, year 1 and 2 had a taster session for cricket – the children loved the session and it gave them a little insight into what cricket is about. There is an ‘All Stars Cricket’ session at Bilton Cricket Club on Friday evenings if your child would like to sign up.

Reception & KS1 Nativity

Last week saw our Reception and Key Stage 1 nativity – what a joyous event! The children sang some fantastic songs, with their favourite one being Donkey Plodding. They loved dancing in the straw and were delighted when Mr Reeve got all staff on stage to sing and dance with them, the parents/carers joining in from the pews! Children in Y2 did a great job of narrating the story that the year 1 and reception children acted out.

Many thanks to the staff for the time and energy they put into this event, I’m sure everyone can agree that the children did an incredible job – as always!

Reading Open Morning & Friendship Day

At the start of October we invited parents and carers in to school to observe their children in class and attend a presentation relevant to their child.

We had a schedule as follows:

09.00 – 09.30 – parents in Team Grainger class (phonics lesson), Team Davidson class (phonics for Yr 1) and Team Williamson (reading for Yr 2)
09.00 – 09.30 – KS2 assembly for parents in hall
09.30 -10.00 – KS2 children to classes with parents to observe reading.
09.30 – 10.00 – Mrs Grainger & Mrs Williamson to discuss reading and phonic for Reception and KS1 in the hall
10.00 – 10.30 – Miss Davidson only. Y2 reading

It was lovely to see so many parents and carers come into school to observe their children and listen to advice from the teachers.

This was followed by an afternoon of Friendship – we had a carousel of activities for the children to take part in followed by an assembly where we celebrate friendship.

Buddy Service

Children in Reception had their first trip to Tockwith Church at the start of October – they walked down to church with their Y6 buddies. Once at church, Y6 read out some messages linked to John 10:10 and our values and lit a candle with their buddy which symbolises the start of the Reception children’s first year at school.

Reception Trip to Grasslands Farm

Last week the children in Reception visited Grasslands Farm in Rufforth. They learnt about crops. cows, horsepower and all managed to have a sit on a tractor!! Many thanks to Farmer David and his team for making the children feel so welcome. They learnt so much for you and can’t wait to go back next year!!

Yoga Club for Reception

Over the past five weeks, some children in Reception Class have taken part in an after school yoga club with Miss Butterill. We have had so much fun and have learnt so many new skills. Themes included, Animals of the Forest, Our Senses and Springtime. It has been such a luxury to be outdoors in the sunshine and in our very own forest school. We have learnt to be trees, butterflies, birds, frogs and so much more. Feather meditation with partners was a big hit along with lion and bumble bee breath. The focus and attention during meditation has been amazing.

Well done to our little yogis!’

Tockwith Trekkers!

Forest Schools has really transformed this half term and the reception and Year 1 children are loving using it. It’s a great space for the children to be able to explore the natural world whatever the weather. We are continuing to develop it and will soon be making way for a den area and a mud kitchen. Many thanks to all the offers of kind donations to help kit it out.

This term some of the things they have explored micro-habitats and used bug viewers to have a closer look at insects and their features. We have also learnt about what a plant needs to grow and the different parts of a plant. The children have been so enthusiastic and have learnt being in our forest school area. We even have learnt a new song to sing going and coming back from forest school which the school and staff love hearing each week!

We can’t wait to explore in the summer term!
